Why study in France 2026 makes sense for Indian students
First, look at the money. Public universities charge non EU students differentiated rates that stay far below UK or US levels. Second, the language barrier is smaller than most families assume, because English taught programmes have expanded fast. Third, and most importantly, the post study work rules favour Indian graduates specifically.
- To begin with, public university tuition sits near EUR 2,902 a year for bachelors and EUR 3,950 a year for masters, at the differentiated non EU rates Campus France publishes for 2026-27.
- Of course, Grande Ecole and private business school fees run higher, roughly EUR 15,000 to EUR 45,000, but that bracket includes HEC Paris, INSEAD, ESSEC and ESCP.
- More than 1,700 masters and 200 bachelors now run fully in English, so you can begin without French.
- Above all, Indian masters graduates receive 12 months of APS/RECE, plus a 12 month renewal, under a 2015 bilateral agreement. In short, two full years.
- At the same time, France hosts roughly 10,000 to 15,000 Indian students a year. As a result you stand out professionally, yet you still find a community.
The second year is not a general European rule. It exists because India and France signed a migration and mobility partnership, and Indian nationals are named in it.

Tuition is small. Rent is the real number.
Because tuition stays low, your real budget question becomes living cost rather than fees. For instance, Paris behaves a lot like London. Lyon, Toulouse and Bordeaux, however, run far cheaper.

English taught programmes and top universities for study in France 2026
Three tracks, not one system
Before you apply, note that France splits its higher education into three tracks, and Indian applicants often confuse them. Therefore it pays to learn the difference before you build a shortlist.
Public research universities
Firstly, Universite Paris-Saclay, Universite PSL and Sorbonne Universite lead this group. They are strongest in sciences, engineering and humanities, and their English taught masters lists keep growing.
Grandes Ecoles
Secondly, Ecole Polytechnique, CentraleSupelec and ENS sit here. Admission is highly selective, and the focus stays on engineering and applied sciences.
Business schools
Thirdly, HEC Paris, INSEAD, ESSEC, ESCP and EDHEC run world ranked MBA and masters in management programmes. Most of them teach in English, although fees climb accordingly.

The France student visa process through Campus France
Campus France comes first, always
If you apply from India, you cannot skip Campus France. You must clear it before VFS France will even offer you a visa appointment. The whole journey runs on the Etudes en France platform, so begin there.
STEP 1 · Open your file
Register on Etudes en France and create your Campus France application file.
STEP 2 · Apply to programmes
Next, shortlist your programmes and submit the applications through the same platform.
STEP 3 · Clear the interview
Attend the mandatory Campus France interview, either in person or online, and show genuine study intent along with language fit.
STEP 4 · Collect the attestation
Collect your Campus France attestation once the team validates your file.
STEP 5 · Apply at VFS France
Apply for the VLS-TS long stay student visa. Carry your passport, admission letter, accommodation proof, financial proof of EUR 615 a month, and health insurance.
STEP 6 · Pay the fees
After that, pay the visa fee along with VFS service charges.
STEP 7 · Validate with OFII
Validate your VLS-TS online within three months of arrival, because that single step activates your residence permit.
Students often try to book the VFS slot first, then discover the Campus France attestation is missing. Open your Etudes en France file at least four months before your intake.

Earning while studying
Work rights while you study in France 2026
964 hours, no extra permit
While you study, you may work up to 964 hours a year as a non EU student, which works out to about 20 hours a week during term. Importantly, you do not need a separate work permit. Your employer simply registers the contract.
- For example, tutoring, hospitality, tech support, campus jobs and freelance projects fill most student timetables.
- In addition, you may work full time during official academic breaks.
- Meanwhile, realistic earnings sit near EUR 700 to EUR 1,100 a month in Paris, and lower elsewhere.
- Besides, even basic French lifts your hourly rate quickly, especially in customer facing roles.
The India only benefit

12 months for everyone, 24 for Indians
Above all, this is the single strongest reason study in France 2026 deserves a serious look. France renamed the old APS permit RECE in 2024, short for Recherche d emploi ou Creation d entreprise.
In general, every masters graduate gets 12 months. Indian masters graduates, however, may renew for another 12, thanks to the 2015 bilateral agreement.
- APS/RECE carries full work rights during the search, so you may take any job, whether full time, part time or freelance.
- File at your local Prefecture before your student visa expires, because a late application will not be accepted.
- France grants the Indian renewal on the strength of the bilateral agreement, provided you show a live job search or a business creation plan.
- Still, the permit stops at 24 months. Consequently you must convert to a work permit before it runs out.
Plan the conversion from month one, not month twenty. French employers hire on notice periods of weeks, so an offer in month 18 still leaves room. An offer in month 23 usually does not.

Finally, you turn the search permit into a real work permit. France offers two main routes here, and they differ mostly in speed.

Notice that language line. France now asks for A2 French at the long term residence stage under the 2026 policy update. Therefore book your classes during the APS/RECE year rather than after it. Citizenship follows later, after further residence and language testing.
