Choosing which test for study abroad depends on three things: what you are applying for, where you are applying, and whether your visa asks for a specific test. That matters because a score that gets you admitted does not always get you the visa.

Unfortunately, most students pay for the wrong test first, and it is an expensive mistake, with fees running from roughly ₹11,700 to ₹29,500 per attempt. So it helps to sort the five tests into two groups before anything else. In practice, many students end up needing one from each group.

Group 1: academic readiness

 SAT    GRE    GMAT Focus

Broadly, these tests measure reading, maths and reasoning. As a result, universities use them to judge whether you can handle the course.

Group 2: English ability

 PTE Academic    Duolingo

By contrast, these tests measure your English. Universities use them for admission, and some countries also use them for the visa.

SAT: for undergraduate applicants

To start with, the SAT is a digital test of about two hours and fourteen minutes. On top of that, Indian students pay a US$68 base fee plus a US$43 international fee, with GST on top.

Moreover, it matters more than it did a few years ago, because a growing list of top US universities, including MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Yale and Cornell, have made it compulsory again. Other schools stay test-optional, and NYU has confirmed it will remain so through the 2026-27 cycle. Even so, skipping the SAT at a test-optional school can still cost you a scholarship.

As a rough guide, 1200 is a reasonable baseline, 1350 to 1450 is competitive, and the most selective schools expect 1500 and above.

GRE: for master’s applicants, mostly in STEM

The GRE General Test now costs US$249 for registrations made on or after 1 August 2026, with a US$55 fee to reschedule or change your test centre. Also, you can take it at a centre or at home for the same price, and you must wait 21 days between attempts.

Meanwhile, many US programmes have made the GRE optional or waive it for strong CGPAs, while a few technical universities still expect it from Indian applicants. In other words, the programme page decides, not the general advice you read online.

Because the fee is paid again on every attempt, it is worth booking only once you are close to your target score.

GMAT Focus

Fee
US$275 centre, US$300 online, + 18% GST

Score range
205 to 805

Best for
MBA and business master’s

GMAT Focus: for MBA and business master’s

First of all, the GMAT Focus Edition is the only version now. Specifically, it is a 2 hour 15 minute test scored from 205 to 805, with no essay section and a new Data Insights section in its place.

For context, a score of 645 sits around the 88th percentile, and the top global MBA programmes tend to look for 685 to 705 and above. Meanwhile, the base fee is US$275 at a test centre and US$300 online, and Indian candidates also pay 18% GST at checkout.

Better still, scores stay valid for five years, which gives you room to apply across more than one admission cycle. Also, many business schools accept the GRE as well, so compare both before you book.

PTE Academic

Fee
₹18,900

Length
About 2 hours

Best for
Admission and UK visas (UKVI)

PTE Academic: for admission and UK visas

PTE Academic costs ₹18,900 in India since 16 March 2026, and the same price applies to PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Core. That matters because the UKVI version is what you need if your UK university asks for a Secure English Language Test for your visa.

Overall, the test takes about two hours and is fully computer-based. In addition, Pearson added two new question types to the speaking and writing sections for tests taken after 7 August 2026, so use up-to-date practice material.

Duolingo English Test: the fast, low-cost option

The Duolingo English Test costs about US$70, takes roughly an hour from home, and returns results within 48 hours. Besides, score reports to any number of universities are free, and more than 6,000 institutions accept it, including nearly all of the top 100 US universities.

The catch, however, is the visa. It is not an approved UK Secure English Language Test, so even when a UK university accepts your Duolingo score for admission, you may still need a separate approved test for the visa.

Admission and the visa are two separate checks.

Admission rules and visa rules are two separate checks, and the second one is where students get caught. For this reason, use the table as a starting point and then confirm on the programme page and the official visa site, since individual departments often set their own rules.

Five test mistakes that cost study abroad students money

01

Booking before reading the programme page

After all, a waiver, a minimum score or a preferred test is usually written there, and it can save you ₹25,000.

02

Taking standard IELTS when the visa needs UKVI

At first glance, the scores look the same. However, only the approved version counts as a SELT.

03

Treating a waiver as a free pass

For competitive STEM programmes, a strong GRE quantitative score can still lift your application and your scholarship chances.

04

Letting scores expire

For example, from the 2026 fall cycle, some universities count a score only if it is valid on the date the application opens.

05

Booking too early, then retesting

Since each attempt is a full fee, book only once your practice scores sit near your target.

Study abroad test FAQs

Below are quick answers to the questions students ask us most about which test to book.

Do I need both an academic test and an English test?

Often yes, because they do different jobs. A GRE, GMAT or SAT shows academic readiness, while PTE, IELTS or Duolingo shows English ability, so most universities ask for one from each group unless they waive it.

Is Duolingo enough for a visa?

Not everywhere. Although it works for admission at thousands of universities, it is not an approved UK Secure English Language Test, so check the visa rules for your country before you book.

Can I skip the GRE?

For many programmes, yes. In fact, several universities in the US and Germany have made it optional, but the rule is set programme by programme, so read the admission page for your exact course.

Which test is cheapest?

The SAT and Duolingo cost the least per attempt, at roughly ₹11,700 and about US$70. By contrast, the GRE and GMAT cost the most, so avoid paying for one you can waive.

Can I take the GRE or Duolingo at home?

Yes. Both are flexible: the GRE can be taken at a centre or at home for the same price, and the Duolingo English Test is taken from home in roughly an hour, with results within 48 hours.
